Do you “fear” losing all your hard work and progress on vacation?
First – let’s take a beat and and realize that it’s impossible to lose ALL your progress in just 1 week. . . but believe me, when you are over 40 and it takes you soooo long to see positive changes and sooooo fast to feel negative ones – I know how a week away can feel a bit scary.
Here is what I do when I vacation to not lose progress and/or my mind.
1 – I keep my breakfast and lunch high protein and lower carbs (and just low’sh in calories to begin with). First, I’m often not super hungry when I’m in the sun. We also eat dinner out and it’s really easy to get carbs & fat when out . . . it’s a lot harder to get enough protein!
2 – I bring my favorite high protein snacks from home (Chomp sticks, Quest Chips, Pure Protein, Mission Protein wraps & Outer Aisle sandwich thins) bars.
3- I find a grocery store as soon as we get here and stock up on fruits, veggies, & lunch. I do breakfast & lunch in and just eat dinner out.
4 – I Stay ACTIVE! Since it’s super hot at the beach I like to get up and get a good chunk of my steps in early while it’s still bearable outside. We vacation in Hilton Head which is very bike friendly and when we get there we park our cars and ride almost everywhere . . . to the store, to Starbucks, to lunch etc. It’s fun and keeps you moving!
5 – I don’t obsess about my macros – I often aim to just track protein and total calories. I have been doing this for awhile now . . . I eat the same things I do at home here . . . and by keeping my breakfast & lunch light I can squeeze in a treat or two for the week.
There is no right or wrong way to vacation. This is what I do. I always tell my clients to make an intentional choice about how THEY want to approach the week and then make a plan and stick to it!
